When it comes to dyin bury me by the road let the marker say the name of the day for the people I know never let it be said later when I'm dead I played my music to the wind I lived my years I listened with my ears to the song we were playin 2. there are many days here that I'll let go by behind me to remind me that I'm still alive breathin & a blinkin shoutin and a thinkin thinkin thinkin optimist goin as sure as the days that blur in the time that I have left 3. down along the corner where the avenue carries fast by crowds that pass the daily afternoon drink a cup of tea don't anybody see anything but what I am I'm sittin by the road where everybody goes on our way to the land

opening: Everybody's got a refrigerator everybody's got a lot of stuff everybody's gotta go sooner or later everybody finds it grand to be free 1. once I left for fortune hunting never thinkin i'd be back met a man his head was bald and gray had a tattered robe and a cross carried a sign which read ain't no gold in these here hills sure as there ain't no god 2. taught me how to live and he taught me how to hate carried me off with his preachin and his wife set me down on a log one day showed me how to meditate told me he knew most ever blamed thing but he didn't know his mate 3. carried on down the railroad track and soon I lost my way picked up my chin and looked around found a colored couple in a shack told me I could stay 'cept black folks in these here parts don't cater too much today 4. fired on past my uncle who was pointin hard at me didn't know I knew'em like I do looks like the kinda fella who wouldn't harm a flea wants me to give up my short life for somethin he claims is free 5. wouldn't listen tried to tell him that it ain't no good can't keep the cold out with a flag have to find a place somewhere I can go live my life on a piece of land my neighbor don't worship gold - repeat opening

I was waitin on my hound dog down by my whiskey jug I was just as sure as could be never was a doubt he'd be comin from the light into the shade of my roof into the shade of my roof 2. I am a rovin rambler on my semi-lonesome way the symmetric way I'm livin divides the hours and the days the sunshine of each moment is compared to yesterday I fight and love and gamble but I'll be still today 2. the colors on the mountain are reflected from the sea which dangle in the atmosphere and meander with the breeze the change that moves the mind about covers the green earth with layers of generations and memories of birth 3. life began for me when I was just a little young couldn't have been much older than you when you were born struck out on my journey to get here where I'm at seems like such a long short time to get here where we are

I'm a bit of a radical I don't wear drawers keep my body precious from historical war I don't eat no animals, couldn't tell you why Mortimer tells me I will be here 'till I die 2. got a lot of memories crowdin my mind got a lot of theories corruptin my time need a little hope that'll help me go 'till I can find a method turnin grits to gold 3. system is the way everybody goes any other way somethin I don't know hair's hangin low just the way it do that's the way we grow it at the 60s school 4. I ain't had too many people ever ask me if I'd be a singer at their jamboree maybe they know that I don't know how to sing or dance stomp or bash I can't even howl 5. I been playin guitar for a bunch of years I been learnin yoddlin for a week I don't want no teacher gonna learn myself that's how you can tell me from everybody else
