about

I started attending a weekly music jam in about 2004. The group did some of the songs from the movie, Brother Where Art Thou?, one being Angel Band. These were fun but I was put off by the religious language of some of the songs & decided to take a crack at re-writing the verses of one of them from a perspective I could embrace.

My Mother used to tell the story from somewhere in her family history of someone on their death bed claiming that the room was full of people he could see through. I of course see this as communicating something hard to verbalize using traditional language… angels etc; Just so, passed friends waiting near is not to be taken literally. Quite a beautiful image I think, the chorus, so long as, again, not taken literally.

lyrics

1.
The latest sun is sinking fast my day is nearly done
My rich encounters now are past conclusion is begun

Chorus; (after each verse)
Oh come angel band come and around me stand
Oh bear me away on your snowy wings to my immortal home
Oh bear me away on your snowy wings to my immortal home

2.
I know I’m due the fond embrace of friends and kindred dear
And though they’ve passed before me here I sense them waiting near

3.
I’ve nearly gained my sacred home my spirit softly sings
The holy place in metaphor a gentle song on wings

4.
I lift my consciousness intense to higher rings unknown
Where I am physical and more and time has ceased to flow
