in its wake a snappy sermon on somebody's famous face

and up thar on the roof spread wide a canopy of sweets
makes a woman blush deeper when she knows she's gonna meet
off on yon horizon just before the night is done
a looker with fame and fortune guaranteed to be the one

foremost in the frilly lineage standing at the gate
several discouraged bandana sagging cross the freight
and they hoped they weren't too late

in a station wagon with the latest latest emperor's clothes
drivin everybody batty with the speed of a garden hose
all laid out with so many coarse unnatural thoughts
seems like we're going to be wedded to everything we caught

nowhere left to travel since their maps proliferate
besides they reached the ocean with no swimming lesson break
and they hoped they weren't too late

it couldn't happen to a finer hombre of the potted plain
with his happenstance of cookery entitled like a hurricane
listening line for jitter bugs and eggs droppin in the beer
together at last and finally the happy sappy ending near

so turning back what could they do but westward steer the crate
ol' Mississippi soon stood barrier so they took to questionin fate
and they hoped they weren't too late
