about

I got up to pee early one a.m., visiting my mom in my home town on Lake Superior. I went to her kitchen window that looked over the hills to the south. It was very foggy, visibility only a few yards. A gull swooped diagonally across my view, feeling like an omen, an omen of wakefulness.

A lot of the gulls of the area hang out at a point on the lakeshore called Black Rocks, some of the oldest exposed rock on the planet, i'm told. Growing up with their constant presence and then to be away for many years their cries evoke an intense nostalgia - thus the song, peppered of course with observations picked up since.

lyrics

chorus:
I love foggy mornings when white gulls shriek and swoop
they play in their ancient way in gatherings out at Black Rocks

1.
they are not in town for a conference
they are not flagging a cab
they are not sliding into home plate
nor putting drinks on a tab - chorus

refrain:
you get tangled in chains chasin money
and you're laid in a grave just the same
best to hold back awhile and savor
the minutes that won't come again

2.
they are not muddying the waters
nor masking the slaughter house odor
no nuclear waste trucked 'cross every state
no mines to explode at the border - chorus
