Though a "love song" it doesn't come out of personal experience. The fictive "narrator" gets more bitter with each verse, told particularly in the division of property. I set out to write something funny around that chorus which came first. So once I established the structure in the first verse I just wrote two more to fit that. Probably took a few sittings and some tweaking. I had an old piano in a basement apartment and loved to sit there and write songs or improv, go over my repertoire on keyboard, figuring out how to do what was originally written on guitar.
