about

I had by this time (1971) militantly renounced some of my received wisdom, particularly religion. A friend pointed out that one of the biblical books, Ecclisiasties, was actually existential so I checked it out, found those familiar phrases... for every season, turn turn... underneath the sun... vanity, vanity... all is vanity and vexation of spirit. I concluded that the book had made the cut by compromising, throwing in a few lines about God,... cuz those lines just don't fit the otherwise pessimistic text.

lyrics

You can always tell your neighbor
He's the one what you can't touch
He's the one what contradicts you
She's the one what don't make sense
They won't always be around you maybe if you say hello
They'll be glad when they've found you could be you'll be
Leanin on the fence together
In the hours of your labor underneath the sun

2.
look up you'll find spring upon you
take a lesson from the tree
it flows forth with buds abundant
and it functions perfectly
it's as tall and wide as heaven
branches lean against your home
get together with your neighbor who may help you
leanin on the fence together
In the hours of your labor underneath the sun

3.
once upon a wagonload of fruit and vegetables quite free
currency of modern paintings book based on the trilogy
could this really be
wonderin where my former friend is
will he never leave my sleep
farewell farmer good to see you you'll be with me
daring during the day
In the hours of your labor underneath the sun

4.
everyday somebody kicks off leaves behind a memory
something they thought couldn't happen
happens nearly every day
look out winter comin up behind'em
winds a stackin snow hip deep
streets of Kyoto wet and damp cold wind something
meltin down a mountain
In the hours of your labor underneath the sun

5.
you may never find a keeper if you're going to stop to see
whether the edge of space is steeper than the point eternity - then again you just may
take a lengthy course in Latin learn another way to spend
all the time you're allocated ignore the bore
steppin up on you
In the hours of your labor underneath the sun
