Media owners hire people to run their operation, people who believe the proper beliefs, magic of the "free market" and all that, an ideology that serves the owners financial/power interests. Anyone who opposes this in any serious way is excluded from these well-paid positions and, naturally, not invited to comment or participate in the media "operation". The owners constitute a class and their class interests include a constant tweaking of the culture, especially government, such that maintaining and expanding their privilege always takes precedent, in so far as that is possible. A little thing called democracy limits this cancerous-like growth but since there are competing factions among the ruling class, there is no consensus for completely eliminating democracy. Rather it shakes out that it is imperfectly limited to those factions. Others must struggle mightily to influence the course of events and it is impressive what they (we) have accomplished. The word Freedom is dangerous, a threat to the rulers so they labor to coopt it, to attempt to align it narrowly in our minds with economic activity. The effect on the population in general is a state of discombobulation.
